Digital photos from Thursday's dress rehearsal Act One continues with the next scene as the ship is underway, steaming across the Atlantic. Night has fallen, and Hope, radiant in the moonlight, stands alongside a very sea-sick Sir Evelyn at the ship's rail.
A despondent Hope, still thinking of her Billy, tries to comfort her pompous fiancée Sir Evelyn who can only moan and groan about being all queasy from the rolling and pitching of the seas. Hope tries to interest Sir Evelyn in the beautiful moon, but he sees nothing extraordinary in it, and continues to complain about his lack of "sea legs." |
Billy finds Hope and Sir Evelyn on deck. Sir Evelyn, glad to see someone else who can keep Hope company, retires to his cabin to weather the rough seas. Hope is upset at first as she tries to explain the position she is in to Billy, but under the spell of the moonlight the two renew their friendship with the song "It's De-lovely". |
The night is long, the skies are clear, and if you want to go walking dear... it's de-lightful, it's de-lerious, it's de-lovely!
I understand why the reasons why
You can tell at a glance,
Please be sweet, my chickadee, |

The following morning Moon realizes Billy has stayed out all night, and learns that his new pal is in love. The good-hearted gangster decides to help, and formulates a plan to discredit Sir Evelyn in order to kill the marriage. Unfortunately, their plans are interrupted when Bonnie finds them both to warn Billy that the Feds know that "Snake Eyes" Johnson is on board, and the ship officers were on the hunt. |
Billy goes off in search of a disguise, and while Moon and Bonnie are discussing what to do, the ship's Purser arrives to ask "Dr. Moon" if he would perform an evangelical service for the passengers and crew. Unable to squirm out of it, Moony reluctantly agrees. |
Up on deck and disguised as a sailor courtesy of Bonnie's pilfering efforts, Billy meets Hope. She is astonished to see him in disguise, but before they can talk they are interrupted by Hope's mother and the ship's purser who orders Billy to get back to work. |
As a joke, Billy paints a sign "I Love You!" on the captain's back as he converses with Mrs. Harcourt, and Hope giggles as the captain walks away, revealing the "love letter." |
